Students in Mrs. Owens’ classroom at Breakfast Point Academy recently brought literature to life with a memorable celebration marking the culmination of their study of The Tale of Despereaux.
Over the past month, students immersed themselves in the beloved novel, going far beyond simply reading the text. Through thoughtful discussions and engaging activities, they explored the story’s themes, character development, and deeper messages. Their learning extended across subject areas, creating a rich, interdisciplinary experience.
As part of their study, students traveled — virtually — to France, the setting of the story. They learned about French customs, history, and iconic landmarks, gaining cultural context to enhance their understanding of the novel. They also practiced speaking basic French phrases, including greetings and introductions, building early language skills in the process.
In science, students examined the differences between rats and mice, connecting real-world knowledge to the story’s characters. By blending literacy, social studies, science, and language learning, the class experienced firsthand how subjects intertwine in meaningful ways.
To celebrate their hard work, the class hosted a charming High Tea in the classroom. Students dressed in their best attire and invited friends to join the festivities. The celebration included tea-time treats, conversation, and special gift bags filled with keepsakes tied to the novel — a thoughtful way to commemorate their learning journey.
The event reflected Breakfast Point Academy’s commitment to engaging, hands-on learning experiences that spark curiosity and create lasting memories. Through creativity and intentional instruction, Mrs. Owens and her students demonstrated what learning in action truly looks like — joyful, collaborative, and impactful.
